Prayers from Kawthoolei - A Documentary by Joe Hill White - 31 Minutes |
|
Synopsis This is a story of war; a miraculous opportunity to emigrate to safety, and the "survivor guilt" that came thereafter. It's the true story of an ethnic Karen man from Burma, now a Canadian citizen, Saw Winning, who is spurred on by a video-letter he receives from a friend, back in his homeland, who he has not seen in a long time. His friend, Saw Nay Wah, has joined resistance forces fighting the military dictatorship in Burma (renamed, "Myanmar" by the junta). In the video-letter Saw Nay Wah asks his friend, Saw Winning, to help his people if he can and instructs Saw Winning to never forget his suffering people. After attending the grave of a mutual friend of both men, Saw Winning decides to go to see Saw Nay Wah along the jungle border between Thailand and Burma. What begins as a reunion, turns into a role-reversal: Saw Winning decides to assist a secret mission to attack a Burmese military outpost, leaving Saw Nay Wah behind to defend the camp with several others. Saw Winning survives the assault on the outpost. However, whether or not the two friends resolve their differences is left for the audience to decide. |
